2 things you can do to make hiring an editor easier
A Tip to Help You Edit Better
Before you hire an editor, you need to create an Editing SOP or Guidebook. Know exactly how you like things and what you want where. Give them the ability to still be creative, but within some constraints you set.
Hiring an editor for your channel can be difficult and scary. You don't know if the editor you hire will create your content as good as you. You don't know if the editor understands everything that goes into your videos.
Your goal when hiring an editor is to save you time and increase the quality of your videos. How can you ensure the person you hire will do right by your content?
I've come up with 2 ways that you can make the transfer from you editing your content to an editor editing your content.
1/ Create an Editing Guide Book
An editing guidebook is useful because you're giving the editor something to better understand what your editing process is. The guidebook should have:
The colors of your brand and where to use them in the video
The font you choose to use for your captions
What style of music you like for your videos (you could even link a playlist of songs)
Any motion graphics, intros, or outros you use on your videos
The camera you use to film and it's settings
Any other information you can write down about your editing process
This guidebook is meant to be the main source of information when it comes to your editor needing consistently used assets for your videos or a point of reference for what you expect from your videos.
2/ Work on Projects with Later Publish Dates
If you're unsure that the editor you hire will be up to your standards. Have them work on projects that will be published on a date farther in the future (2-3 months).
By doing this you're giving the editor the time and space to fully understand how you edit your content. It takes time for you to give feedback that will help the editor understand why you'd make certain decisions when editing.
If you're working with a less experienced editor, then giving them time to consistently get feedback from you will help them succeed in their role.
A Video with Great Editing
This video is from Ryan Ng Films. Probably one of the best storytellers I've seen in a while. His videos are so well crafted that you can't help but want to watch more or think deeply about the topic he introduces in the video. Let me know what you think of this video.
A Resource to Make You A Better Creator
There are tons of resources out there to help make you a better creator. This week I wanted to highlight Recut. Recut is an app that will automatically take out all of the silences in your video and allow you to export that as a timeline to your preferred editing software. It's only $99 but saves an enormous amount of time when you have long clips with many silences.
