The 9 Stages of Post Production

A Tip to Help You Edit Better

When you're getting into the edit, do you have a process that you go through?

If not, you're probably just doing whatever feels right in the moment. But did you know that in traditional media they have set up a process that helps make sure that edits go smoothly?

Here aer the 9 stages of post-production and what they mean:

  1. Acquire footage: This is getting all the footage and materials for the video from yourself or a client.

  2. Organize footage: Putting all of the materials into files for easy finding later.

  3. Review and Selection: Watch and listen to all the materials. Note what might be the best elements for your project.

  4. Assembly: Put together all the clips from stage 3 into a skeleton of the whole story.

  5. Rough Cut: Cutting clip "fat" and starting to create a better flow for the story

  6. Fine Cut: Pacing is dialed in and maybe a few glitches in sound and visuals, but now you're going to make some final tweaks

  7. Picture Lock: You have locked the visual elements and now you're onto mixing audio.

  8. Finishing: Put color correction on the clips and make final tweaks to the audio

  9. Mastering and Delivery: The finished product is rendered out and distributed.

Now not all projects you work on will go through all of these stages, but most will. This could also sereve as a starting point for setting up your own post production process if you don't already have one.
