Which Do You Prefer: Simple or Complex?
Simple editing has it's place and generates it's own effect on the audience.
Do you think that every piece of content needs to be edited like a movie or TV show to make an impact?
I’ve been pondering this question about the complexity of an edit all week.
I’ve come to the conclusion that: it doesn’t.
Just like the one I’m breaking down this week, your videos could be:
Simple.
Zooms, quick cuts, music, sound effects, they all have their place in an edit, but the important thing to remember is that you are creating for the consumption of your audience.
Just like with UX/UI design, you need to build your edit to be as accessible as possible. But then you also need it to have the impact you want it to have.
Complex edits can sometimes take away the feeling you are trying to build in your content.
I urge you to think about what impact your video could have with a super simple edit.
Maybe your audience is more engaged with a complex edit.
I believe depending on your topic, you don’t need a complex edit to make an impactful video.
The video today, uses simple jump cuts to remove silences.
The creator doesn’t need anything else.
They are engaging through his passion and relevant topics alone.
He is talking about important topics so there’s a deeper reason to why his video is better without complex editing:
Conversation.
I came across this creator on my YouTube homepage and immediately fell in love with his content because it’s a conversation.
By stripping all the complexity from the edit, this creator is allowing for his video to feel more like he’s talking directly to you.
It’s less about entertainment and more about teaching the audience.
I find this very refreshing in a sea of over edited pieces of content meant to keep your eyes glued to the screen.
Ultimately how much you edit comes down to what your goal for the video, your style, and skill level.
So I’ve given you my argument, but I’m curious, do you think every piece of content needs to become a more complex edit to become “better” content?
